Indoor season results
As the indoor season has now concluded, we are excited to share the results from the first BC Indoor Championships, which took place in Kamloops on March 7-8. Four of our New West Spartans athletes competed, and we are proud to report on their exceptional performances.
Following a positive experience with indoor training at the Richmond Olympic Oval during January and February, and their debut at the Jerome Indoor Games, all four of our athletes achieved excellent results at this competition.
Junior Category:
Samantha Wepruk had an outstanding performance, winning silver in the 60mH with a time of 11.07. In the Long Jump, she claimed gold with a jump of 4.61m. Samantha also won gold in the High Jump, clearing a height of 1.40m.
U18 Group
Shina Eastwood competed in the 60m, finishing 4th with a time of 8.26—a personal best improvement of 0.44 seconds from her previous time at the Jerome Indoor Games. With this new result, Shina has qualified to compete at the Canadian Indoor Championships in Toronto.
U16 Group
Arina Holovchenko delivered solid performances with the personal best in both the 60m (9.69) and the Long Jump (3.75m).
Boys’ Side
Zavier White had a remarkable showing, winning three gold medals in three events: 60mH: Zavier finished first with a time of 12.51, his first time running the event. 60m: He set a personal best of 10.06, improving by 0.34 seconds from the Jerome Indoor Games. Long Jump: Zavier’s jump of 3.41m earned him another gold medal.
In total, our athletes brought home 6 medals—5 gold and 1 silver—from Kamloops.
A special highlight from this event was the opportunity for our athletes to compete in the long jump alongside Canadian Olympic Heptathlete Georgia Ellenwood, who competed in the Tokyo Olympics with Nina Schultz, another athlete from the Spartans program. Our athletes also had the chance to take a memorable picture with Georgia!
Congratulations to Samantha, Shina, Arina, and Zavier for their impressive achievements!
Additionally, a huge shout-out goes to Samantha Wepruk for her excellent coaching efforts in Kamloops. Samantha went above and beyond to assist and support all the athletes, contributing to their success.
Exciting News!
We also want to celebrate some fantastic news that came on Saturday, March 15. Our VOC alumni, Ceili McCabe, who trained with the Spartans team at Mercer Stadium for the steeplechase, won the 3000m gold medal at NCAA D1! Ceili became the first Canadian woman to ever win an NCAA title in the 3,000m (indoors) event.
We are incredibly proud of all our athletes and their continued hard work and dedication.

New West Spartans Girls on the Road to Success
Everyone in our Track & Field family remembers the achievements of Nina Schultz of New West Spartans, holding 5 Canadian records in combined events. With her 13 times BC High School Champion titles, she was a key athlete at New West Secondary School, twice winning the BC High School Team Champion for Girls and Overall. Nina was ranked 6th at the World Junior Championship and earned a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 10th place at the Toyko 2021 Olympic Games.
In the 2023 athletics season, new names are part of the legacy of the New West Spartans Track & Field Club. One of them is Samantha Wepruk, a grade 12 student from Burnaby South Secondary School who joined our club in May 2023. Samantha is now the Fraser North zone champion in high jump with an achievement of 1.45m. For the Spartans, she jumped 1.58m and ranked in 4th place in the Canadian U18 Championships in Sherbrooke on August 12, 2023. This huge achievement inspired Samantha to start with high motivation and preparation for the 2024 athletic season.
In the Junior Development Group, this year Mila Cote-Goudet joined the Spartans, going on to win the BC JD Champion titles in Pentathlon, High Jump, and Shot Put. She also achieved the BC Award standard in High Jump. With great results in other events as well, Mila is comparing strongly with our other previous elite athletes and is showing great promise for the future.
The new generation of our girls’ group are training very hard to achieve great results in the 2024 athletic season. We’re inviting new members, including students from Elementary and High Schools across Burnaby and New Westminster from all athletic backgrounds, to train with us and improve their athletic abilities. All youth are invited to join.
All the athletes of our community will have a chance to train with the high quality and experienced coaches of the New West Spartans, who have trained more than 55 BC High School Champions and 35 Canadian Champion Title holders.
